Karakkam Movie Review: A Musical Twist on the Same Old Ghost Formula

The Story Premise
The story kicks off on New Year's Eve with a drunken, foolish prank gone wrong. Two careless young men end up removing brass crosses from a local church cemetery. Unknown to them, this reckless act disturbs the rest of five spirits from a bygone era. Suddenly, the duo finds themselves pursued by these restless ghosts and must find a way to undo their mistake before time runs out.
My Take & Streaming Experience
I streamed Karakkam on Sony LIV, and while it falls right into the "yet another ghost movie" category, it does bring something fresh to the table. Instead of the cliché white-saree, eerie-silent specters, the ghosts here are presented with a colorful, theatrical retro flair. Filled with disco-era energy, music, and eccentric body language, the supernatural portions feel visually unique.
However, strip away the musical gimmick and you're left with the same predictable horror-comedy formula. Sreenath Bhasi delivers a natural performance in his usual comfort zone, but the narrative eventually relies on familiar tropes. Overall, it's an okay one-time watch on OTT—somewhat different in style, but comfortably familiar in substance.
