The Complete Story
Ratchagan centers around Ajay (Nagarjuna), an unemployed young man with an unstoppable temper when it comes to injustice. Whenever he witnesses someone breaking the law, committing a crime, or harassing the innocent, he steps in with his fists, beats the wrongdoers to a pulp, and lectures them on ethics. His peace-loving father, Padmanabhan (S.P. Balasubrahmanyam), works for an insurance firm and constantly worries about Ajay’s dangerous anger. He even sends Ajay to anger management and meditation classes, but the efforts fail because the guru agrees that Ajay’s rage against social evil is entirely justified!
Things take a romantic turn when Ajay meets Sonia (Sushmita Sen), the daughter of a wealthy business tycoon, Sriram (Girish Karnad). Impressed by Ajay’s bravery and pure heart, Sonia falls deeply in love with him. Sriram initial resists their bond but eventually agrees to their marriage under one condition: Ajay must control his temper and stay out of fights for a set period.
However, dark clouds gather in the form of Gnaneswar (Raghuvaran), Sriram’s vengeful stepbrother. Years prior, Gnaneswar was cheated out of his legitimate share of the family business and spent time in prison. Now free, Gnaneswar devises a ruthless, mastermind plan to destroy Sriram’s empire and ruin his life. Gnaneswar leverages ten corrupt henchmen to frame Ajay for murder, driving a massive wedge between Ajay and Sonia’s family. Forced into a corner where peaceful endurance is no longer an option, Ajay must unleash his fury, unravel Gnaneswar’s deadly web of conspiracy, and step up as the ultimate savior—the Ratchagan.
The Viewing Experience
Produced on a record-breaking budget for its time by K.T. Kunjumon, Ratchagan is a time capsule of late-90s Tamil cinema extravagance. From lavish set pieces designed by Thota Tharani to high-octane stunt choreography, the visual scale is undeniably impressive. Nagarjuna brings immense style and intense physical energy to the role of Ajay, while Sushmita Sen shines gracefully in her Tamil debut.
The absolute highlight of the film is A.R. Rahman's iconic album. Chartbusters like "Soniya Soniya", "Love Attack", and "Lucky Lucky" carry high re-listen value decades later. While the second half gets somewhat bogged down by melodramatic tropes and a bloated runtime, the combination of Rahman's music, Raghuvaran's suave villainy, and stylish action sequences make Ratchagan a enjoyable nostalgic watch.
