Kamali, a bright young graduate, resides in Kotagiri (Nilgiris district, Tamil Nadu) with her sister Malliga and brother-in-law Shekar while searching for a stable career path. During a trip to Madras, disaster strikes when her handbag is stolen—leaving her terrified of losing her vital academic credentials forever.
Miles away in Jaipur, Rajasthan, Suriya—an orphan living a carefree life—discovers the purse and safely mails it back to her address. Deeply moved, Kamali writes back, sparking a passionate correspondence through letters. Over time, an extraordinary romance develops entirely on paper. The pair make a solemn vow to fall in love without meeting in person first. As a symbol of her devotion, Kamali hand-embroiders a gift package featuring a lotus-patterned woollen sweater, instructing Suriya to wear it the day they finally meet in real life.
Life moves quickly when Suriya gets transferred to Madras, staying alongside his new colleague, Siva. Meanwhile, Kamali travels to Madras seeking employment and stays with her friend Jensi. Complications arise when Neya, Suriya's new boss, becomes smitten with him. Despite her relentless attempts to gain his affection, Suriya remains unwavering in his loyalty to his unseen love, Kamali. Back in Kotagiri, Jeeva, a wealthy businessman, asks Shekar for Kamali's hand in marriage. When Kamali meets Jeeva in private, she respectfully reveals her unbreakable love for Suriya. Heartbroken and out of options, Kamali boards the Nilgiri Express to return home. As the train pulls away, tea accidentally spills on Suriya's uniform shirt, forcing him to remove it on the platform.
