Unveiling Rajiv Hari Om Bhatia: The Untold Story Behind Akshay Kumar's Rise to Fame

Do You Know the Original Name of Akshay Kumar?

Beyond the glitz and glamour of Bollywood lies a fascinating tale of hard work, martial arts, and a sudden name change that redefined a superstar's destiny.

The Big Reveal

Before he became Bollywood's beloved "Khiladi", he was known as:

Rajiv Hari Om Bhatia

Born on September 9, 1967, in Amritsar, Punjab, Rajiv Hari Om Bhatia grew up in Old Delhi's Chandni Chowk before moving to Mumbai. His father, Hari Om Bhatia, was an Indian Army officer who later worked as an accountant, inspiring a deep sense of discipline and patriotism in young Rajiv.

The Journey Before Stardom

Long before standing in front of movie cameras, Rajiv Bhatia pursued a path far removed from acting. His journey to stardom was anything but straightforward, marked by immense grit and versatile life experiences.

Martial Artist & Chef in Bangkok

Dropping out of college to follow his passion for martial arts, he traveled to Bangkok, Thailand. There, he trained in Muay Thai while working long hours as a chef and waiter to pay his bills.

Back to Mumbai: The Martial Arts Instructor

Upon returning to Mumbai, Rajiv began teaching martial arts to local students. It was during this phase that a student's parent—a modeling coordinator—suggested he try modeling.

The Accidental Modeling Career

Rajiv earned more money in a two-day furniture showroom photo shoot than his entire monthly teaching salary. The realization struck quickly: camera work was his true calling.

Why Did Rajiv Bhatia Become "Akshay Kumar"?

The story behind his name change is quite unusual. Many actors change their names due to numerology or astrologers' advice, but for Rajiv, it was a sudden stroke of inspiration from a movie!

1987 — The Tiny Cameo in "Aaj"

Rajiv landed a tiny 7-second, non-speaking role as a martial arts instructor in Mahesh Bhatt's film Aaj. The film starred actor Kumar Gaurav.

The Character Name Connection

In the film, Kumar Gaurav's character was named Akshay. Standing on set, Rajiv felt an unexplainable, instant connection to that name.

The Immediate Decision

Without consulting astrologers or producers, he walked straight to the court office the very next day and officially changed his screen name to Akshay Kumar.

"I don't know why, I just went to the court and got my name changed. Kumar Gaurav's character was called Akshay in Aaj, and I took that name for myself!" — Akshay Kumar in an interview.

Keeping the Roots Alive

Even though the name "Akshay Kumar" brought him iconic stardom, smash-hit action franchises like Khiladi, comic mastery in Hera Pheri, he never forgot his real roots.

He named his film production company Hari Om Entertainment (now Cape of Good Films) as a dedicated tribute to his father, Hari Om Bhatia. Close friends and family in his personal life still affectionately address him by his birth name, Raju or Rajiv.
